Wajir Governor Ahmed Muktar has pleaded with school heads not to send students home due to the on-going biting drought.

Speaking at Korondile secondary school during the launch of the 2021/2022 financial year Wajir county bursary fund, the governor said that the county government had received Shs 100 million for bursaries and scholarships.

‘My government will soon dish out the funds through the ward bursary fund committees. I appeal to the management committees at both the county and ward levels to accelerate the disbursement process,’ he said.

Muktar added that his administration was obligated to assist parents facing hard economic times due to the drought and the Covid -19 plague.

‘’We understand it is not easy to run schools without money and that is why we have chosen to gift substantial amounts of money to them,’ he said.

He revealed that there were so many applicants for the bursaries but that the funds were limited hence few beneficiaries.

The governor promised to have the kitty increase the funds in the next financial year so that there are many beneficiaries.

‘There is need to have modus operando procedure on the management of bursaries so they only benefit the needy,’ said the governor.

The National Drought and Management Authority issued an acute alert over poor livestock health and milk production in the entire drought prone North Eastern Kenya. Under such circumstances, pastoralists have to walk for miles on end for water for both their livestock and for household use.
