Vulnerable women invited to apply for road construction scholarships by KIHBT

The Kenya Institute of Highways and Building Technology (KIHBT) is offering partial scholarships to vulnerable young Kenyan women to pursue long-term project-specific courses such as Diploma in Highway Engineering and Craft Certificate in Road Construction.

These scholarships will cover tuition and accommodation expenses, opening doors for female students eager to enroll for courses relevant to the construction industry.

KIHBT is in partnership with the East Africa Skills for Transformation and Regional Integration Project (EASTRIP) to boost the enrollment of female students into these specialized programmes offered at the institution.

To be eligible for these scholarships, applicants must meet specific academic requirements.

For the Diploma in Highway Engineering, a minimum mean grade of C- (minus) in the Kenyan Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) is required, with at least a C- in subjects such as English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, or any technical subject.

For the Craft Certificate in Road Construction, a minimum KCSE grade of D (plain) is the prerequisite, with at least a D in English, Mathematics, English, Chemistry, or a technical subject.

Applicants should demonstrate a genuine interest in technical careers and meet the outlined academic requirements.

To apply for the scholarship, eligible women from vulnerable backgrounds are required to follow specific steps:

  1. Complete the scholarship application form,
  2. Submit a handwritten justification of no more than 300 words explaining why they deserve the training and scholarship,
  3. Provide a stamped and signed letter of recommendation from their area chief,
  4. Attach copies of their National Identity card, KCSE certificate, other academic certificates, and any supporting document like letters of recommendation, and
  5. Submit the completed application form, declaration page, and attachments in a sealed envelope addressed to;

The Director, Kenya Institute of Highways and Building Technology, Commercial Street, P.O. Box 57511-00200, Nairobi.

These can be submitted by post or hand-delivered to the KIHBT main campus on Commercial Street, Nairobi. The deadline for submission is November 30, 2023.

The KIHBT encourages persons with disabilities who meet the minimum qualifications to apply.

However, applicants are reminded that providing false information or engaging in canvassing will result in automatic disqualification.

Late applications will not be considered, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.

For those interested in the January 2024 intake, applications are now open for the following courses:

Diploma courses (3 years):

  1. Diploma in Highway Engineering
  2. Diploma in Land Surveying
  3. Diploma in Quantity Surveying

Craft Certificate courses (2 years):

  1. Craft Certificate in Road Construction (CCRC)

Grade courses (3 months per grade):

  1. Construction Plant Mechanics
  2. Plumbing and Pipe Fitting
  3. Refrigeration and Air Conditioning.
