A total of 180 students from Mumias East Constituency have received scholarships from a Non-Governmental Organization to join Polytechnics and Technical Training Institutes in all the 47 counties of Kenya.

Speaking during a prayer day at Shianda in Mumias East Sub-county, Khaunga Integrity Youth Training Activities (KIYTA) Director Mr. Josphat Wanyangu said vulnerable students who finished Class Eight and Form Four were issued with the scholarships to learn and be equipped with skills in order to avert poverty in the communities.

The delivery of scholarships was specifically targeting TVET programmes offered by the Ministry of Education.

The director said government capitation fund disburses about Sh300,000 in polytechnics asking vulnerable students to make use of the funds instead of venturing into Boda-boda business and gambling in football.

The Chairman of KIYTA Patrick Ifire said those with mean grade of D- and above are at liberty to pursue different courses in polytechnics, adding that such prayer days helps transform students to have good morals.

Kakamega County senatorial aspirant Sellah Keya, also former MCA said that it was a golden chance for students to receive scholarships, appreciating the work of the Chinese on road constructions for skills empowerment from polytechnics.

Dr. Benson Makokha, the constituency’s aspiring MP said if elected, he will have data in each wards to check if parents’ ability to pay school fees and that through CDF bursary kitty he will ensure the most vulnerable benefit unlike other constituencies where they disburse the same amount to every bursary applicant.
