All 27 Vocational Training Centres (VTCs) in Busia County will open today, Monday May 6, while ECDE centres, primary and secondary schools will remain closed after the National Government postponed their opening owing to raging floods across the country.

Addressing the press at Amoni Primary School in Malaba Central Ward, Busia County Executive Committee Member for Education and Industrial Skills Development Beatrice Nakholi said VTCs will open on May 6 since there is no communication from the National Government to further postpone the opening of VTCs.

The CECM member asked 500 trainees for the KCB Tujiajiri programme in 14 selected centres sponsored by the county government to report this week for orientation ahead of formal opening next week.

Nakholi said primary schools will remain closed until further communication from the Ministry of Education. However, she revealed that the department has obtained a report of all ECDE centres and schools in the country.

Reports indicate that most schools have toilets, which have sank or filled with water to the bream. She said they would assess the situation and drain the water.

For schools whose toilets have sunk, Nakholi told teachers not to allow pupils near such toilets once schools open, noting that they are planning to seek support of the partners to avail temporary shelter like tents in case the situation will escalate.

“As the President said; your safety comes first. It would be paramount to be cautious during the advent of floods to avoid calamites,” she said.
