A visually impaired candidate from Maranda High School in Siaya County has emerged among the top performers in the 2020 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examination.
The gallant John Moses Ominde, 18 years old, beat all odds and managed to score an A- (minus) of 78 points.
He was the only candidate with special needs out of the over 400 candidates at the school.
Moses, who lives with his parents at Carwash estate in Kisumu, was among the 14 top students with special needs.
The candidate who could hardly hide his joy attributed his success to God, hard work and support from his parents and teachers.
“It was the work of God and glory is to Him,” he said.
Moses aspires to study law at the prestigious Harvard University. “It is the institution of my dream and I pray to God to see me through,” Moses said.
He said that he has opted to choose to study law in order to rescue the downtrodden in society.
According to his father, Samuel Ominde, Moses scored 405 marks in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Examination (KCPE) at the Golden Elites in Kisumu.
Ominde said his son started having problems while in lower primary school after being misdiagnosed for malaria.
“A medic prescribed a quinine treatment for seven days instead of the requisite three day,” he said.
Ominde said he had consulted many specialist doctors and consultants in a bid to restore his son’s eye sight but all in vain.
“An orthopedic once told me that his eye sight will be diminishing as he grows older,” he said.
Ominde said that he had initially applied for his son to be admitted to Nakuru High school since the institution has facilities for special needs children but his efforts did not bear fruits.
He said that his son had to learn through hardships at Maranda since the school lacked special teachers and facilities for the same.
“But I am glad that he managed to cruise through after only six months of brail training,” he says.
