Needy students of the now-famous Sigira Mixed Secondary School in Migori County are staring at hope as philanthropists and well-wishers join forces for an event at the school to help other students after their own story went viral, with their only guardian being their grandmother.
When he was spotted beside his grandma with a bunch of sukuma wiki, Brian Ochieng didn’t know that he was going to be a blessing in disguise to many. Brian, a student at Sigira Mixed Secondary, has become a star among his fellow students and the broader community.
Lead philanthropist and comedian Eric Omondi will now lead a fundraiser to support other students in the same school who are facing financial difficulties.

Through Kenyan artist Akothee, a mega fundraising event was held today, Wednesday, July 30, 2025. The event is expected to raise funds that will be channelled to clear fees for many other students.
The event is being spearheaded by Akothee, who first came to help Brian Ochieng and his grandma. She visited the school, coming to terms with the reality of how other students faced similar challenges. She noted that out of 400 students, 50 were needy.
The move by the artist has won the hearts of many, as some Kenyan parents and students struggle with raising school fees. Brian Ochieng is one among many, and when well-wishers come in to help , it eases the burden.
