Kaimosi Friends University (KAFU) and Kaimosi Friends National Polytechnic have entered into international academic partnerships with Vignan’s Foundation of Science, Technology and Research (VFSTR), India, in a move expected to boost research capacity, specialised training, and staff exchange programmes in Vihiga County.

The Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), signed on Tuesday, were witnessed by Vihiga County Governor Dr. Wilber Ottichilo, who said the collaboration would strengthen the role of higher education institutions in driving research-led development.

The agreements follow a May 2025 visit by a delegation from the County Government of Vihiga, led by Governor Ottichilo, to Vignan University in India, where initial engagements laid the foundation for the partnerships.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, Governor Ottichilo emphasised that research remains central to informed decision-making and sustainable development, noting that universities play a critical role in generating evidence-based data to support policy formulation. He underscored the importance of science, technology, and innovation in accelerating socio-economic transformation.

KAFU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Peter Muita said the partnership would facilitate staff exchange programmes, allowing faculty from KAFU to teach, conduct joint research, and access advanced technology at VFSTR, while Indian scholars will also visit KAFU to support teaching and research activities.

Prof. Muita added that the collaboration will help address existing gaps in specialised fields, particularly in medical-related disciplines, through visiting lecturers who will support both students and academic staff. He noted that joint research projects and collaborative proposal development will also enhance the institutions’ ability to attract competitive research funding.

Kaimosi Friends National Polytechnic Deputy Principal (Administration) Lilian Cherotich welcomed the partnership, saying it will expand institutional linkages and create opportunities for exchange programmes that benefit both staff and students.

The County Government of Vihiga continues to strengthen partnerships with local higher education institutions, including positioning KAFU as a centre of excellence in climate action, while supporting Kaimosi Friends National Polytechnic through the Department of Education.
