Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST) has procured and launched a state-of-the-art ambulance to save more lives and improve patient outcomes by providing the right care at the right time.
The ambulance is equipped with the latest life support systems including advanced airway management and monitoring equipment, a defibrillator and a ventilator.
Speaking during the launch, the University Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Romanus Odhiambo said the move was in line with their mandate to safeguard health and promote the well-being of human being essential to sustainable development.
“As a university, we have a responsibility to our community, country, and the whole world to provide health solutions. We cannot forget the problems we faced during the Covid-19 pandemic where people could not access health facilities on time,” said Professor Odhiambo.
He said the aim of the university is to play a proactive role in the health of the community, the country, and the world at large.
“We have also invested in the latest communication and navigation systems to ensure the ambulance responds quickly and efficiently to emergencies and enable health practitioners to communicate with other emergency service providers in real-time,” he said.
He added that the ambulance will enhance the training of medical students in emergency medical technology.
On July 4, last year, the university launched a medical research center whose core mandate was to create better healthcare opportunities as well as accentuate the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of the country’s health sector for better services to Kenyans.
“So today we are celebrating this new addition to our university, region, and the community, and let us remain committed to continually providing the highest level of healthcare to those in need,” the VC said.
He also appealed to the community and health facilities around to make use of the ambulance.
Professor Odhiambo said the ambulance had added an avenue to raise internal revenue adding to the school farm and self-sponsored learning programmes.
