A Nairobi court has released a 20-year-old university student accused of defrauding Sidian Bank of over Sh7.8 million.
Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina granted Mount Kenya University student Collins Mutuma bail of Sh100,000, pending trial on multiple charges, including conspiracy to defraud, stealing, and handling proceeds of crime.
According to the prosecution, Mutuma—“jointly with others not before court”—allegedly conspired to siphon Sh7,882,845 from accounts at Sidian Bank on January 11, 2025.

He is also accused of stealing Sh471,302 from a bank account belonging to Peninah Karoki, which was allegedly transferred to his Diamond Trust Bank account.
Investigators claim that he later moved Sh300,000 and Sh169,900 to M-Pesa accounts registered under Dominic Gichiri Kagwima and Samuel Mukola Matheka, respectively, while “knowing or having reason to believe the funds were proceeds of crime.”
Mutuma denied all the allegations. The case will be mentioned on November 7, 2025, for further directions.
