The University lecturers have announced that they are going to down their tools to open the chapter for strikes following government silence on their demands for the implementation of 2017-2021 and 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreements, (CBAs).

According the Kenya Universities Staff Union, (KUSU), the lecturers will proceed to strike following the government’s failure to fully implement 2021-2025 CBA including the payment of phase II arrears totaling to Ksh2.73 Billion for the 2026-2026.

They are also advocating for  the fully implementation of the 2017-2021 CBA, which has remained unfulfilled despite a ruling by the  Employment and Labor  Relations Court and also failure to jumpstart, negotiate and conclude the 2025-2029 National CBA.

Through the circular directed to 42 University council chairs, KUSU Secretary general Dr. Charles Mukhwaya said the lecturers shall not report to their respective institutions following the expiry of seven days’ notice.

“We wish to notify you that all unionisable employees represented by the KUSU shall withdraw their labour after the expiry of seven days with effect the date of this notice,” reads part of the notice.

This comes following the expiry of seven days strike notice released by the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) last week.
