Mount Kenya University Health Students Association (MKUHSA) and the local ACK Church Mothers Union recently held a free medical camp in Mithini village, Machakos County to provide much-needed health services to over 300 local residents.

“We had a team of doctors, oral health officers, nurses, clinical officers and community health workers volunteering to provide medical care to the people in the area for a day,” said Ahmed Shenga, President of MKUHSA who led the medical team.

The community benefited from general medical check-ups, medication reviews, counseling for family planning, cervical & prostate cancer screening, dental care and eye assessment.  The event also included health education (family planning, nutrition, diet and public health) sessions and distribution of essential medications including contraceptive methods.

“One of the most rewarding parts of the experience was seeing the impact we were having on people’s lives. We saw a lot of people with preventable illnesses and it was clear that the camp was making a significant difference in their lives,” Shenga said.

The Church and the Mithini community expressed their gratitude for the services and the organizers pledged to continue supporting similar initiatives.

“Overall, our experience at the Mithini medical health camp was humbling and inspiring. It was a reminder of the importance of access to medical care and the impact that volunteers can have in improving people’s lives,” said MKU College of Health Sciences Principal Dr. Josphat Njuguna.

MKU School of Pharmacy Dean Dr. Michael Mungoma thanked the community leaders, the church and acknowledged Kasha, a leading platform for digital retail and distribution of health goods for providing a nurse and educational materials.
