Cash-strapped Moi University has agreed to settle a medical bill amounting to Ksh.168 million to a private hospital in Eldoret town for medical services rendered to its staff and their kin.

In a consent signed between the higher learning institution, the defendant and Mediheal Hospital, the plaintiff before Justice Eric Ogola of the Eldoret High Court recently, the university committed to pay Ksh. 2 million monthly until the whole amount is cleared.

The hospital, owned by former Kesses MP Swarup Mishra, moved to court two years ago after the university defaulted to pay the money owed to it for medical services rendered to the institution’s 3,000 staff and their families.

Justice Ogola who presided over the matter, consented to the agreement terming it an order of the Court.

According to Court documents, the defendant had entered into an arrangement with the private hospital a decade ago whereby its staff and spouses were to be treated at the facility.

The defendant’s lawyer Eric Liyali told the court that his client was ready and willing to abide by the signed agreement regarding the payment of pending medical bills to the hospital.

This was after the plaintiff’s lawyer Aloo Romana raised concern over the failure by the university to clear the outstanding medical bill despite several reminders.

The judge advised the hospital management that they were at liberty to come back to court in the event the university defaulted on its agreement to settle the outstanding bill.
