Higher Education Principal Secretary Prof Micheni Ntiba has said that the greatest challenge currently facing universities and other institutions of higher learning is lack appropriate accommodation with some students forced to sleep and cook in the same single room.
The PS regretted that students from all parts of the country who enroll in the universities are usually shocked to discover that some institutions completely lack hostels while others have funny accommodations which are not up to the required standards.
He challenged all the institutions of higher learning to ensure that students have standard and affordable accommodation in a bid to enable them have a conducive learning environment.
Prof. Ntiba said that they are currently consulting with the State Housing department in an attempt to create a university city with a complete ecosystem, adding that such a facility will accommodate all the students and enable them lead decent lives.
“The best way of resolving the acute shortage of accommodation in the institutions of higher learning is by establishing a university city complete with ecosystem meant to accommodate all the students. This will enable the students lead a decent life unlike now when many are living and cooking in one single room. We must stop this,” said the PS.
