Kisii county Governor Simba Arati has challenged universities in the region, particularly Rongo University in Migori county, to steer research on climate-smart agriculture to improve crop production and boost food security.
Speaking while officiating the relaunch of the Migori County Agricultural Show, Arati said that a country without enough food to feed her people stands to face many problems that hinder development.
“Universities are endowed with enough knowledgeable educators who should encourage and lead their institutions to embrace research to solve immediate problems in the community,” he said.
The governor said that with climate-smart agriculture comes increased income which will enable residents to live a decent life.
He asked residents to take advantage of the Lake Region Economic Block’s marketing strategy to diversify their production in the market.
Migori Governor Dr. Ochillo Ayacko expressed pleasure to relaunch the show which was interrupted in 2020 by the COVID-19 outbreak.

Ayacko revealed that as the world continues to experience adverse effects of climate change, his administration has been assisting farmers with improved drought-resistance and high-yielding seeds of maize, sorghum, beans and rice.
He said that this had been made more possible due to partnerships with various development partners to empower small scale farmers through the introduction of micro-irrigation systems and pan-water harvesting technologies.
The Migori show saw many farmers showcase a variety of farm produce in addition to others activities such as traditional dances by the Kuria traditional dancers.
