Principals have been advised to be flexible in the management style of their institutions and engage students, parents and teachers in meaningful conversations to ensure understanding between the codependent parties.
Speaking during Kitui County’s Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) meeting in Mombasa, TSC Coast Regional Director Juliet Kariuki urged the school heads to accommodate creativity without compromising the school’s vision.
“Let’s do a little more of education of our children and parents. Let’s not assume whenever parents come for AGM meetings that they know everything,” she urged.
She noted that they were managers at a very critical time when schools were still trying to settle and recover from the disruption caused by Covid-19; and the transition from the 8-4-4 system to the new Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) amid tough economic times.
“As principals, you are dealing with three generations in your institutions; the baby boomers, the generation Y, who make the majority of teachers in your staffrooms and generation Z who are your students,” she explained.
All these changes, Kariuki said, call for everyone to think of ways to adapt to the changing work environment and that the secret to hacking generation Y and Z was forming an amicable relationship by being a parent figure to understand them better and ease their work.
She encouraged that principals should take time to check their systems and learn how to navigate them and not leave everything to school secretaries.
Additionally, she urged the principals to unlearn and do away with systems that were no longer applicable in the present day in their institutions.
The Director also urged the principals to establish policies in their schools that help to effectively and efficiently run the institutions.
“What is your school policy? Exam policy? Policy regarding lessons attendance? You need to have a proper and effective revision policy and always follow up to know that learning is going on,” stated Kariuki.
