University of Nairobi Student Council President, Rocha Madzao

The president of the University of Nairobi (UoN) Student Council has called for a ‘mega’ protest on September 2 to address the persistent neglect of students’ needs by the government.

In a statement seen by Education News dated August 16, president Madzao Rocha urged students to unite for a mega demonstration to ensure their concerns are heard.

“On September 2, 2024, we must come together for a mega demonstration to make our voices heard,” reads the statement.

Madzao, in the statement, called for a substantial reduction in the university’s accommodation fees.

He said that students are requesting the fee be capped at Ksh15,000, a decrease from the current Ksh42,000 which he describes as excessive considering the poor condition of the hostels.

“The University of Nairobi’s accommodation rates must be reduced significantly before September. We refuse to pay exorbitant fees of 42,000 when our living conditions remain deplorable. We demand a maximum fee of 15,000,” reads the statement.

Further, he stated that the demonstrations will also be a stand to reject the new university funding model.
