University of Nairobi (UoN) students held demonstrations in Nairobi protesting against the new University Funding Model.

The students presented a petition to the Ministry of Education (MoE) which was received by Dr. Beatrice Inyangala, the Principal Secretary (PS) of the State Department for Higher Education and Research.

They later had a meeting with her, demanding either complete abolishment of the funding model or allowing all students access the funding, where they failed to reach an agreement.

UoN Students Association (UNSA) President Rocha Madzao, who led the protests, lamented that with this model, it has become cheaper to go to private institutions than public ones.

Madzao called on student leaders from other universities across the country to hold protests from September 9 against the funding model.

“We will continue to be on the streets if the government won’t listen to our cries,” he said.

President Ruto has continuously defended the funding model, emphasizing its consideration for students’ varying levels of vulnerability.

More than 12,000 aggrieved students have so far registered appeals through the Higher Education Financing (HEF) portal contesting their allocated bands.
