UoN Law student dies by suspected suicide in Nairobi

Police in Nairobi have launched investigations after a University of Nairobi law student was found dead in a suspected suicide at his family home.

Detectives have launched investigations into the death of a University of Nairobi law student who is suspected to have taken his own life in the Kilimani area of Nairobi.

The body of Yatich Yano Ruto, aged 20, was discovered in his parents’ home, where he had been staying with the family on Saturday, October 11, 2025.

According to police and family members, Yano was a second-year law student at the University of Nairobi, and the motive behind the incident remains unclear.

Investigations show that on October 10, the student had taken dinner with his family before retreating to his bedroom, where he locked himself inside. He was not seen again until the following evening when his lifeless body was found.

Family members had thought he was studying in his room. However, concern grew after he failed to come out for an extended period. His brother eventually broke down the bedroom door at their house on Kirichwa Road, where he discovered the body hanging in a wardrobe with a laptop cable tied around his neck.

Police were alerted and arrived at the scene before transferring the body to the mortuary for a post-mortem examination. Authorities confirmed that an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing.

The case was among six similar incidents reported on Friday alone, in what police described as a worrying trend. Officers noted that the majority of recent victims have been men.

World Health Organisation (WHO), reports that such incidents that fuel suicide include unemployment, bereavement, academic or legal pressures, and financial difficulties. Other contributing causes include bullying, previous suicide attempts, a family history of suicide, alcoholism and substance abuse, as well as mental health conditions such as depression and bipolar disorder.

Government officials have reiterated that measures are being implemented to curb the rising number of such tragedies.
