A 28-year-old Kituhu sparked a lot of controversy on the internet yesterday evening when he set himself ablaze at the Jomo Kenyatta roundabout in Mombasa’s CBD in an attempt to end his life after he was heard saying his life is miserable without pocket money while in school.

Mwembe Tayari Area Chief Mohammed Musa confirming the incident said the student took the limelight when he climbed a billboard erected on the roundabout before soaking himself with paraffin and setting himself ablaze thereafter.

According to the Mombasa County Chief Fire Officer, Ibrahim Basafar, Toho suffered 50 per cent burns following the incident and currently, he is at the Coast General Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) undergoing treatment.

Basafar noted that preliminary investigations had indicated he set himself ablaze due to a lack of money and high cost of living.

“We have since established that one of the reasons why he set himself ablaze was due to lack of  money to sustain his life,” he noted.

Ktuhu was rescued by onlookers who quickly extinguished the flames using water.
