A 26-year-old university student left many mouths agape after clinching Mbiuni/Kathama ward seat in the just concluded general elections.

Peter Kilonzo, a final year student at Mount Kenya University garnered 6,061 votes sending the incumbent Joseph Wambua packing.

Speaking to Education News, Kilonzo urged the youth to be part of the change they want not only by voting but also by vying for various seats when the opportunity knocks.

“If your vote matters just know that your leadership does as well,” he said.

He narrated that he became an orphan at six years and endured difficulty while studying but that did not deter him from achieving his dreams.

“I depended on well-wishers who would fundraise for my studies. It was not a walk in the park,” he added.

He promised to promote education and urged students to reciprocate by giving education priority so as to to uplift the education standards in the area.

The MCA-elect narrated that during his campaigns he met a lot of youth whom he mentored.

“I organised different youth mentorship forums , visited different schools and encouraged pupils and students to work smart and prioritize education. Education is the equalizer and the son of a charcoal vendor will one day wear a white collar shirt,” he said.

He promised to deliver to his people who believed in him despite having no money or big vehicles for campaigns.
