University stage protests to demand for Govt funding

Machakos University Main Gate

University students are now out in the streets protesting the delayed disbursement of first years’ capitation fund.

Making good the threat they made last week, they have variously staged protests that are aimed at making the government consider their plight.

Machakos University today protested and lighted bonfires and blockaded the Katoloni road with huge boulders.

They said they had pinned their hopes on scholarships and loans under the new funding model, but two months down the line after the first years set foot on campus, there has been no money even for their subsistence.

A week ago, student leaders representing various universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions promised to go into street protests in solidarity with their vulnerable first-year colleagues.

Recently, the higher learning education model was revised in a way that all categories, including the most vulnerable, will have to pay for their education.

More updates on the situation and other developments will follow soon as they check in.
