University reforms must be done in line with the law- Education: CS Prof. Magoha

By Erick Nyayiera

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha has maintained that university reforms in this country must be done in strict compliance with the law.

The CS said that universities are bound to reform if they are to offer quality education but warned that the institutions must not be run as individual’s properties because they belong to the government.

Prof. Magoha stated that all the legal bodies must be involved in any of the reforms done at the institutions giving an example of the involvement of the Commission of University Education (CUE) when a university is awarded a charter.

Prof Magoha, who was speaking in Gem during the handing over of Moi university’s Odera Akongo campus to Maseno University ,warned all the University Councils and Vice Chancellors  that they must always refer to CUE if they are to touch the institutions’ legal instruments.

The CS who was flanked by Siaya Deputy Governor Dr. James Okumbe and Gem MP Elisha Odhiambo assured people of the government’s commitment to ensure that Odera Akang’o University survives after its revival, noting that there is a historical perspective as to why it has to survive in Gem sub-county which is the home of academic doyens.
