The University of Nairobi (UoN) has climbed into the top 1,000 global university rankings according to the QS World University Rankings 2025, continuing its upward trajectory in international post-secondary standings.

The institution’s ranking improved from the 1,000-1,200 range to the 909-950 range among 1,500 international institutions, according to the latest rankings.

The University of Nairobi’s improved ranking this year can be attributed to advancements in critical areas such as employment outcomes, academic reputation, international research, and the faculty-student ratio.

The institution’s top-ranking factor was employment outcomes, which improved by 92.5 per cent, placing it in the 251-300 range. Additionally, academic reputation saw a slight increase from 9.6 per cent in 2023 to 10 per cent. In the employer reputation category, which evaluates how employers perceive post-secondary graduates, the UoN recorded a 2.9 per cent decline, dropping from 14.6 per cent last year to 11.7 per cent.

“However, the institution saw an improvement in the ranking of citations per faculty, which stood at 20.1 per cent and positioned itself in the 1,051-1,100 range,” the data shows.

In the category of international research networks, an indicator that assesses the richness and diversity of an institution’s research partnerships, the university scored an average of 50.1 per cent. Sustainability received the lowest score, standing at 1.8 per cent.

In the previous year, UoN held the 1,425th position out of 2,000 institutions in the Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR). Meanwhile, Kenyatta University, which entered the rankings last year, has retained its position in the range, of 1,201-1,200 range with employment outcomes as the leading indicator.

The CWUR is a leading consulting organisation providing policy advice, strategic insights, and consulting services to governments and universities to improve educational and research outcomes.

It has been headquartered in the United Arab Emirates since 2016. Since 2012, CWUR has been publishing the only academic ranking of global universities that assesses the quality of education, employability, quality of faculty, and research without relying on surveys and university data submissions.

The ranking started out as a project in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia with the aim of rating the top 100 world universities. It was quickly reported worldwide by universities and the media and many requests were received to expand it.

In 2019, the ranking expanded to list the top 2000 out of nearly 20,000 universities worldwide, making it the largest academic ranking of global universities.
