Unions clash on whether government should change school reopening dates

Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) and Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) have clashed on the debate on whether to postpone the reopening of schools due to the planned nationwide demonstrations by Azimio La Umoja slated for Monday, March 20. Reopening of schools had been planned to take place on the same day.

KUPPET National Chairman, Ombuko Milemba, has called for the postponement of reopening date to Wednesday to keep children out of harm’s way.

On the contrary, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Collins Oyuu has opposed the proposal as he sees it might look like a move to support the opposition led by Mr Odinga.

However, parents and education stakeholders are asking the government through the Ministry of Education to postpone the re-opening of institutions after the half-term break from going back to schools on Monday.

The chair of the National Parents Association, Silas Obuhatsa, has now called the government and the opposition to come to terms to evade the looming mass demonstration.

“With demonstrations, you can never know the outcome. There are parents who support both Azimio and Kenya Kwanza coalitions. We appeal to the two leaders to dialogue for the sake of the country, for the sake of the Children who are innocent. Children did not vote,” he said.
