Unions ask government to ensure teachers safety

By Roy Hezron

Two teachers’ unions have called on the government to guarantee the safety of members following cases of attacks by students and rising insecurity in Kapedo, Baringo County and other areas.

Kenya Union for Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) chairman Omboko Milemba and the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) Deputy National Treasurer James Ndiku said the government should be as swift in taking action against learners who attack teachers, as it is when teachers abuse students.

The two, who were speaking separately in Iten during the Keiyo branch Kuppet and Knut elections, called on the government to compensate teachers who are injured while on duty.

They also asked the government to restore peace and normalcy in Kapedo and other areas saying the prevailing insecurity was affecting learning.

Speaking at another function in Siaya town, Milemba, who is also the Emuhaya MP, gave the government seven days to address insecurity in Kapedo, failure to which they will withdraw members from the area.

Ndiku called on the government to give teachers a risk allowance saying they were at a high risk of contracting Covid-19.

“Teachers are always in contact with learners yet they don’t have any personal protection equipment,” he observed.
