Teachers from Bungoma have said that they are not ready and are not going to allow the deduction of 3 per cent from their basic salaries towards the affordable housing levy as proposed by President William Samoei Ruto.
Speaking at Mabanga Agricultural Training College (ATC) grounds in Kabuchai Constituency in Bungoma County, during the Labour day celebrations, Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Executive Secretary, Augustine Kundu Luketelo, has noted that teachers have their own land and a housing scheme which they have already developed.
According to Luketelo, just like other teachers countrywide are adversely affected by the harsh economic conditions, the deductions from their salaries, which is un-constitutional could harden the situation. He therefore called on the government through the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to increasing salaries for teachers to salvage the situation.
On his part, the KUPPET Chairman, David Barasa, urged the Nzoia Water and Sewerage Company (NZOWASCO) in Bungoma to ensure that it supplies well treated, clean water to both public and private schools in order to avoid a situation in which learners may consume contaminated water as it was the case at Mukumu Girls High school which caused the death of several students and a teacher.
