A union official has issued a two-week ultimatum to the government to restore peace in volatile regions of Baringo North and South Constituencies. The official says the runaway insecurity situation has paralyzed education in the area.
Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Baringo Branch Executive Secretary, Zachariah Nyomboi, has decried the slow pace by the government to restore elusive peace in the porous borders threatening closure of schools.
Among schools affected by insecurity include Yatia Secondary School, Ng’aratuko, Kosile, Chemoe and Kagir Primary Schools.
Speaking during an exclusive interview with Education News, the unionist asked government to apply full force of the law to bandits wreaking havoc in the area.
He said scores of people have been killed with government taking little or no steps to stop killings in the area.
“Teachers are disillusioned lot in delivering their duties due to rising tension reigning supreme. If government fails to protect learners and our teachers, they should withdraw their security,” said the disappointed union official.
He pleaded with the government through the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) to help build the vandalized schools, open roads and address the issue with the seriousness it deserves.
He also asked the authorities to distribute relief food to locals and school going children to cushion them as they were hugely affected by effects of drought.
Mr. Nyomboi however asked Teachers Service Commission to deploy trained teachers to address teachers’ shortage in the area .
