Members of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) from Kisumu County have faulted the government for not allocating sufficient funds to enable smooth transition of learners to Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) next year.
Kisumu County KUPPET boss, Zablon Awange, similarly insisted that the funds allocated during the budget reading were not enough for the full implementation of the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC).
Despite allocation to the Ministry of Education and Teachers Service Commission (TSC), Awange said the amount was not enough to ensure that all the financial requirements in CBC were met.
Speaking in Kisumu, Awange said that TPD was ignored as no funds were allocated for the same.
“We warn the TSC not to charge teachers for TPD until a subsidiary budget factors it in,” he said.
The official lamented that nothing much on teachers remuneration was considered, even as Covid-19 continues to ravage the economy, adding that teachers want a renegotiated Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
“We however applaud the allocation for employment of more teachers by TSC and infrastructure allocation by the Ministry of Education,” he remarked.
Further, Awange added that nothing on teacher’s promotion was mentioned yet there is stagnation and continuous extension through contract for retired principals.
The official wondered why the TSC is not keen on hiring new teachers.
He said they expect that the subsidiary budget will address this omission as demotivated teachers are threat to success of the curriculum.
