The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Kipkelion branch in Kericho has decried mistreatment against teachers by multinational tea companies in Kericho and Bomet.
This comes after a tea company allegedly demolished teachers’ houses while they were at work without prior notice.
The branch Executive Secretary Stanley Bore said that such acts demoralize teachers and in turn affect their performance.
Speaking while addressing the press, he said that this was unacceptable.
“Recently, a local tea company demolished teachers’ houses without notice. The teachers were forced to seek accommodation elsewhere, a situation which as a union we strongly condemn,” he stated.
He said that teachers have a right to accommodation and companies should ensure they get the houses for free or at subsidized rates.
“Multinational companies have a duty of ensuring teachers get good and conducive houses because they offer crucial service to children of this country,” he said.
Bore further demanded that teachers in the area be given incentives, arguing that tutors working in Sambret, Ngoina, Kimugu, Changana, Maramara and Kitumbe tea estates face numerous hardships.
