Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has hit out at the Ministry of Education for the manner in which it handled teachers who were in charge of primary schools Term One Games held in Busia town last week.
KNUT Teso branch Executive Secretary, Geoffrey Ekasiba, has accused the ministry for not paying allowances to teachers on time leading to them suffering during the event that lasted for three days
“Some teachers had to share beds while others went without food just because the ministry failed to release money on time. When we go for marking examinations we are told to work on debt, when we come to co-curricular activities, the story is the same,” he lamented.
Ekasiba has warned that in future, teachers will not enter the fields before they are paid in advance.
His sentiments were echoed by Busia County Primary School Sports Association Chairperson, Chrisantos Tipondo, who hailed the teachers for sacrificing and allowing the games to go on despite the financial challenges they were facing.
“I want to appreciate teachers who oversaw the games to the end; otherwise it could have been an embarrassment to me and other officials if we could have failed to select a team to go to regionals,” he said.
While addressing the issue, Busia County Director of Quality Assurance and Standards, William Makori, had earlier said the education office is looking into the issue and promised that all teachers who took part in the games will be paid.
“I want to apologize and assure you that the issue is being addressed and every teacher will get their money,”said Makori.
