Union boss thanks gov’t for enhancing infrastructure

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has thanked the government for the provision of funds to support infrastructure in both Secondary and primary schools.

Speaking at Nchoro Primary School in Kisii County during the local meeting, Nyanza Regional Chairman Mr. Stephen Mochama Obiri attributed the progress to the handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Premier Raila Odinga as it brought forth the agreement towards pursuing development.

“Without peace and unity there can’t be any development,” said Mochama.

He thanked KNUT members who had joined other rival unions for returning to their original union to strengthen it. He also said that the membership in Gucha South branch had reduced to 420, but thanked his executive members led by the Executive Secretary Mr. Joseph Makabe Moguche and his treasurer Mr. Tom Nyandoro in aggressive recruitment campaign that has increased the membership up to more than 500.

“The renewed rapport and campaigns to strengthen the union by my executive members has begun to bear fruits,” he said.

He regretted that learning at Nchoro and Eberege primary schools was disrupted by warring clans because of the death of a 67-year old woman namely Janes Nyabonyi Omari who was allegedly killed for her involvement in witchcraft.

Kenyenya Sub-county Director of Education Mr. George Ouma told this writer that he visited the schools and confirmed that learning had resumed.

He thanked teachers for rising above family differences and asked them to work with their learners with love especially at this time when they are preparing for the national examinations.
