Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Kilifi branch Executive Secretary has attributed high consumption rate of alcohol, drug abuse and indiscipline among school students to parental negligence.

While speaking to Education News from Kilifi town recently, Mr. Jonathan Kenga said that parents are equally to blame for failing in their responsibilities of guiding their school going children to the right direction.

He further said that parents should therefore monitor closely the movements of their school children to be able to know their behavior and their whereabouts at the same time.

The KNUT branch Executive secretary however revealed that evil deeds among students greatly contributed to dismal performance in national examinations in schools and has even lead to school unrests.

Mr. Kenga therefore urged parents in the county to cooperate fully and work with other education stakeholders in a bid to address unrests which have lately brought big losses to schools through burning of property by errant students who abuse drugs among other substances.

He asked the government and other education stakeholders to take drastic measures to arrest unrests in schools across the country, noting that the move would ensure smooth operations in learning.

At the same time, Mr. Kenga urged parents in the county to assist teachers to instill discipline into their school children.

He stated that discipline remains the only key factor towards the success of their children in final national examinations.
