The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has established a rescue centre for sexual, gender-based violence and female genital mutilation victims in the North Rift.

Set up at AIC Chorwo in Chesoi, Marakwet East, the centre will provide a safe haven for girls and women fleeing the three vices that have recorded high prevalence in the region, hampering development of girls’ education and women economic development.

Speaking while receiving donations from the UN agency, Deputy Governor (DG) Grace Cheserek said Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and gender-based violence has derailed the development of the girl child and women, reversing development gains in the region.

She further asserted that the vices are outdated and called upon communities in the North Rift to shun them and focus on empowering girls and women through education.

The DG thanked the organization for the gesture, saying it will come a long way in reaching the county’s vision of ensuring that women and girls are given ample time to develop themselves.

“We are highly indebted to UNFPA for this kind and timely gesture coming within the ongoing 16 days of activism against sexual and gender-based violence. The centre will help the girls and women escape the vices and provide education opportunities for them.

The donation included 50 complete sets of bedding comprising mattresses, blankets, beds, pillows and bed sheets.
