As schools close for the April holiday, an important moment awaits Grade 10 learners. It is a time to reflect and make a critical decision-whether to continue with their current pathway or make a change. At the same time, Grade 9 learners and their parents are preparing for what could be one of the most significant choices in their academic journey as they select pathways come May.
In the Competency-Based Education (CBE) curriculum, these decisions are not made blindly. They are guided by a clear structure that offers learners opportunities to align their education with their strengths, interests, and future aspirations. Among the seven available tracks, the Humanities and Business Track (Code: SS20) under the Social Sciences pathway stands out as one of the most versatile and impactful.
This track is particularly suitable for learners who are interested in understanding society, engaging with people, and exploring opportunities in business, governance, and community development. It reflects the broader vision of CBE: nurturing learners who are engaged, empowered, and ethical citizens capable of contributing meaningfully to society.
The Humanities and Business Track offers a wide range of subject combinations, giving learners the flexibility to design a learning pathway that suits them best. Learners are expected to select up to three subject codes from the available options. These combinations include subjects such as Business Studies, Geography, History and Citizenship, Religious Education (Christian, Islamic, and Hindu), Computer Studies, General Science, and even foreign languages like French, German, and Mandarin Chinese.
For instance, a learner may choose combinations like Business Studies, Geography, and History & Citizenship (SS2025), while another may opt for Computer Studies, Geography, and History & Citizenship (SS2024). Others may explore combinations that integrate religion and culture, such as Christian Religious Education, Geography, and Mandarin Chinese (SS2050), or that blend business with global perspectives, such as Business Studies, French, and Geography (SS2068). The diversity of these combinations ensures that no learner is limited; each one has the opportunity to find a path that resonates with their ambitions.
What makes this track even more relevant is its alignment with CBE’s core competencies. Learners develop communication and collaboration skills through group work and discussions. Critical thinking and problem-solving are sharpened through the study of history, geography, and business scenarios. Creativity and imagination come into play in areas such as entrepreneurship and community projects. Citizenship is deeply embedded, especially in subjects like History and Religious Education, where learners engage with values, ethics, and societal responsibilities. Digital literacy is also supported through the inclusion of Computer Studies in several combinations.
At the heart of this track is the principle of nurturing talent through the three key stages: Discover, Develop, and Deploy. First, learners have the opportunity to discover their interests through a wide variety of subject combinations. As they progress, they develop their skills through continuous learning and competency-based assessment. Finally, they are prepared to deploy these skills in real-life situations, making meaningful contributions in their communities and beyond.
The career opportunities that arise from the Humanities and Business Track are extensive and diverse. Learners can pursue careers in business as entrepreneurs, managers, marketers, accountants, and financial analysts. Those inclined toward governance and public service may become policy advisors, diplomats, civil servants, or political analysts. Others may venture into law, journalism, or international relations.
For learners interested in history and culture, careers such as historians, archivists, museum curators, and cultural heritage officers provide meaningful pathways. Geography-related combinations open doors to professions like urban planners, environmental consultants, GIS specialists, cartographers, and climate change analysts. There are also opportunities in disaster management, surveying, hydrology, and population studies.
Religious education within the track also creates pathways for roles such as religious leaders, educators, counsellors, chaplains, and interfaith dialogue coordinators. These careers play a crucial role in building ethical and cohesive societies.
What becomes clear is that this track does not prepare learners for a single career-it prepares them for a wide range of possibilities. It equips them with transferable skills applicable across sectors, making them adaptable in a rapidly changing world.

This is what makes CBE a transformative curriculum. It moves away from a one-size-fits-all approach and instead recognises that every learner is unique. By offering flexible pathways such as the Humanities and Business Track, it ensures that each learner has the opportunity to grow in the areas where they have the greatest potential.
However, for learners to benefit fully, parents and guardians must also be well informed. These decisions require guidance, discussion, and understanding. When parents are aware of the available tracks, subject combinations, and career pathways, they are better positioned to support their children in making informed choices.
As learners prepare to make these important decisions, one thing remains clear: the choices they make today will shape their future. With the right guidance and understanding, the Humanities and Business Track can open doors to fulfilling careers and meaningful contributions to society.
In the end, education is not just about what learners study-it is about who they become. And through CBE, that journey is now more purposeful, flexible, and promising than ever before.
