Teachers hold a position of trust and respect in society. They shape young minds, instill values, and guide the next generation. However, when professional boundaries are crossed, the consequences can be swift and severe. Certain behaviours not only harm learners but also tarnish the integrity of the teaching profession. Understanding what constitutes misconduct is key to protecting both your career and your students.
One of the most common causes of disciplinary action is absenteeism and chronic lateness. Teachers who regularly miss lessons or report late disrupt learning, demotivate students, and set a poor example. Unexplained or repeated absenteeism is considered gross misconduct and can lead to suspension or even dismissal.
Equally serious is engaging in immoral or inappropriate relationships with learners. Such behavior violates both professional ethics and the law. It destroys trust between teacher and student and often results in deregistration from the teaching service, alongside potential criminal prosecution.
Examination malpractice is another grave offense. Teachers who leak exam papers, assist students to cheat, or manipulate marks compromise the education system’s credibility. The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) treats such acts as professional misconduct, with consequences ranging from suspension to outright dismissal.
Misuse of school funds and property also invites disciplinary action. Embezzling money, misappropriating resources, or using school property for personal gain undermines accountability and public trust. Teachers found guilty of financial impropriety face interdiction and mandatory restitution.

Drunkenness or substance abuse while on duty is strictly prohibited. A teacher under the influence loses authority, endangers students, and breaches professional conduct standards. The TSC enforces strict sanctions in such cases, emphasizing the importance of sobriety and sound judgment in teaching.
Insubordination and defiance of authority are additional triggers for disciplinary action. Teachers who openly ignore instructions from headteachers, education officers, or the TSC disrupt school operations and demonstrate a lack of respect for institutional hierarchy. Repeated insubordination can lead to warnings, suspension, or dismissal.
Neglect of duty and poor performance also warrant intervention. Failing to prepare lessons, mark students’ work, or meet curriculum standards is seen as professional negligence. Continuous poor performance, even after warnings, may result in demotion or termination.
Finally, abusive language, bullying, or physical assault toward students or colleagues is unacceptable. Schools are meant to be safe spaces, and any form of violence—verbal or physical—violates the teacher’s role as a mentor and protector.
The head of an institution plays a critical role in maintaining discipline. They monitor and evaluate the conduct of teachers, ensure duties are performed responsibly, and document any misconduct. When a teacher violates professional standards, the head can recommend appropriate disciplinary action, ranging from warnings and suspension to interdiction, demotion, or even dismissal. The recommendation is then reviewed and acted upon by the TSC or relevant education authority, ensuring fairness and adherence to official procedures.
In conclusion, professionalism is non-negotiable in teaching. Every action a teacher takes reflects not just on themselves, but on the wider education system. Upholding ethical conduct, discipline, and respect ensures learners thrive in a safe and productive environment while safeguarding a teacher’s career. Teachers who cross the line risk far more than disciplinary action—they risk losing the very trust that defines their profession.
