Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) has now called for the disbandment of the Salaries and Renumeration Commission (SRC) for misleading the government on unpaid staff dues, which have now been confirmed to be Ksh7.9 billion.

The union said they had been vindicated as the Ksh7.9 billion is what they had been demanding from the government contrary to the initial SRC report which put the figure at Ksh624 million.

Speaking at a press briefing in Machakos after a meeting of Union officials with SRC and Treasury officials were a report on the Ksh7.9 billion was released, the union officials led by UASU Secretary General Dr Constantine Wesonga, Kudheia Vice Secretary Odoyo Ogenga, and Dr. Charles Mukhwaya (KUSU) said the stalemate which has led to a prolonged strike in public universities was caused by government officials’ negligence.

Dr. Wesonga said the SRC officers who misled the government about the amount owed, thus causing the suffering of students, should apologize and resign.

“If you are an officer who has been misleading the government that the dues owed to university staff is only 624 million. Do you still need to be in that office?” he posed.

“Apologize to the students and to the Nation. Resign and go home or go back to school so that you can be taught how to calculate,” demanded the UASU Secretary in a stern address to the government.

The unions said now that the SRC, Treasury, and Ministry of Higher Education officials had confirmed the figure, the dues should be paid immediately to enable resumption of learning in Public Universities.

The dons singled out the SRC and the Chairman of Universities Vice Chancellor’s Committee Prof. Mugendi for misleading the government and added that they should take responsibility for the strike which has lasted for more than six weeks.
