Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) is now demanding Moi University to withdraw redundancy notices issued to staffs before attending consultative meeting.

In a letter to the university acting vice chancellor Prof Kiplagat Kutut dated 21st May 2025 , the union through their lawyers indicated that previous attempts to discuss the matter never proceeded due to lack of proper documentation that UASU had requested the university to provide.

The union now wants the university to also provide the information before the consultative meeting is held. UASU also pointed out that there has never been any consultative meeting in respect to the intended redundancy.

The Union further stated that there was no evidence by lack of records indicating minutes of such meetings, the attendance list, who co-chaired the meetings and the takers of the minutes.

“It’s a practice that such meetings between the Union and Management are co-chaired by representatives of the parties, no such meeting ever happened,” part of the demand letter from UASU read.

The university had retrenched nearly 900 workers without what the union say is lack of proper consultation.

Staff unions accused the university management of defying court orders requiring stakeholder engagement before any redundancy measures.

The university has already started the process of restructuring calling heads of departments to provide lists of programmes and number of students in the university.

In a letter dated 20th May 2025 to all chairs of departments, dean school of arts and social sciences, Prof Mary Wahome had requested the chairs to provide the information to enable the school seek intervention from the university management.

The request for the information is in connection of termination of employment of a number of staff due to financial challenges across all the departments.
