The Uasin Gishu County Government, in partnership with Nairobi-based business incubator iHub, has rolled out a two-day training program for Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) coordinators to introduce digital learning for young children.

The initial phase of the initiative will be piloted in ten ECDE centres across the county.

Chief Officer for Education Eunice Suter, during the launch, said that the county is committed to advancing digital education.

She stressed that such efforts would help learners remain competitive in a rapidly changing learning environment.

“With strengthened partnerships such as the one with iHub, this Digital Literacy Initiative targeting early childhood education centres ensures that digital learning can begin with the youngest learners at an early age,” she said.

Suter also highlighted that the project was nurturing “a seed of innovation, creativity, and prosperity” as digital competencies become increasingly important in education.

County Director of Education, Peter Ruto, underscored the significance of equipping teachers with digital skills to effectively deliver the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), saying digital readiness was key to its success.

SEF Project Lead, Harry Ochieng, welcomed the collaboration with the county government, adding: “We look forward to close collaboration with the Uasin Gishu County Government, particularly the Department of Education, to bring transformative impact to learners through the digital literacy program for the short- and long-term prosperity.”

He noted that the initiative seeks to improve literacy and numeracy outcomes by equipping teachers with structured lesson plans and digital tools for real-time assessment of learner progress.

The training is part of the Sub-Saharan Africa EdTech Fund program, which works to strengthen foundational skills for ECDE learners. Currently, it is being implemented in both Kenya and Nigeria, with pilot projects already underway in Nairobi, Kajiado, Mombasa, and Uasin Gishu, Kenya.
