Two students from Meru University of Science and Technology are staring at life imprisonment if they are found guilty of gang raping a minor.
The two university students were charged at a Tigania court in Meru County with gang-raping a seven-year-old pupil on Monday.
Brian Munjalu and Francis Chepkosi denied defiling the Grade One pupil in turns.
Tigania Principal Magistrate Faith Munyi remanded them in custody pending a bond hearing.
It is alleged that on January 10, the two they jointly and intentionally defiled the child after luring her into their house in Kinyeria village, Nkomo location in Tigania West.
The victim was returning home from school at around 4pm when she found the two accomplices standing outside their house where Chepkosi summoned her inside.
The two men then asked her what she had learnt that day where the unsuspecting girl enthusiastically responded that their teacher had taught them Mathematics, Hygiene and English.
She was then alerted when Munjalu allegedly told her to remove her clothes but she declined after which the man undressed her by force.
The two men then took turns defiling her.
Her distraught mother who reported the matter at the Nchiru Police Station said she found the girl crying outside the gate at around 7pm.
Senior State Cunsel Michael Mutune said prosecutors had lined up four witnesses and opposed bond for the accused saying tha they were a flight risk.
The bond request will be considered on Monday, January 17.
Under the Sexual Offences Act No 3 of 2006 gang rape attracts a prison term of not less than 15 years and may extend to life imprisonment.
