Two schools in Baringo remain shut owing to flooding

One of the schools submerged in water in Baringo County. Two schools marooned by water in Baringo South to remain closed as others resumed learning yesterday from the extended holiday.

Two schools, Leswa and Longeiwan Primary, will remain closed until the water that has marooned them subside after Perkera and Molo rivers broke their banks.

Baringo County Commissioner Stephen Kutwa said the affected pupils will be relocated, with Loitip Primary expected to host a bigger number of the learners due to its capacity.

Addressing the press, he said the safety of pupils was a priority hence it was important to wait for the water in the affected schools to subside before taking the learners back to their respective institutions.

“Plans of relocation have been put forth for affected learners. These learners will be relocated to the neighbouring schools and we will take them back to their respective institutions once the flood waters subside,” he said.

According to him, most schools in Baringo North opened yesterday although turnout was low due to insecurity challenges, especially in parts of Saimo Soi and Bartabwa Wards.

He urged learners and parents who fled their homes due to insecurity to return, saying security measures have been enhanced and that public servants should not use the security challenge as an excuse.

While bemoaning last month’s boat tragedy that claimed lives of seven school going children in Baringo South, he said safety measures have been enhanced to protect learners in schools bordering Lake Baringo who use boats as means of transport.

Kutwa maintained that only registered boats would be allowed to operate in the lake, and further warned of legal action against operators found culpable of violating the stipulated rules and guidelines.

”We have enforced safety measures that mandate passengers to use safety jackets besides ensuring that the boats carry only the required capacity. We have also trained 200 coxswains to enhance their navigation skills,” added Kutwa.
