Students of Kisii National Polytechnic have expressed concerns for their safety due to the increasing number of road accidents near their institution.

“We are living in fear about our lives that are exposed to avoidable dangers,” said Mary Moguche.

They appealed to Kisii County Government to erect pumps along the road from Kereri Girls’ School, past their institution, to Daraja Moja Bridge to control reckless drivers from overspeeding and causing accidents.

Their concern comes barely three hours after a fatal road accident near their institution that claimed two lives and injured 20 others, who were rushed to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital for treatment.

According to eyewitnesses, the accident involved two matatu vehicles in a hit-and-run situation.

“One of them was unloading passengers when the other hit it on the spot, just causing death and confusion,” reported a student who said he watched the accident helplessly as he crossed from their polytechnic gate.

The students accused motorists of reckless driving while drunk and threatened to hijack and beat them unless they shun the bad behaviour.

“Tunaongea na Governor Arati kwanba hii barabara isiporekebishwa tutaifunga wenyewe ” (We are taking to Governor Arati that if this road will not be redesigned, we shall take the law into our hands and close it,” said a student who identified himself as Jack Bazu.

Kisii County Police Commander, Ronald Kirui, confirmed the death of the two passengers whose bodies were taken to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital for preservation pending identification from the next of kin.

Residents in Kisii town, who spoke to Education News, termed the Kisii National Polytechnic – Daraja moja road a black spot and asked the government to find a long-lasting solution to curb the road carnage there.
