Two guards killed in Kabete Vet Lab Secondary attack linked to suspended student

Detectives in Kabete are piecing together CCTV and forensic clues after a violent raid at Vet Lab Secondary School left two guards dead and offices vandalized.

Police officers from Kabete Police Station have opened a full-scale investigation following a fatal overnight raid at Kabete Vet Lab Secondary School, where two security guards lost their lives and school property was heavily damaged.

The attack happened late Friday night, soon after a Form Four rehearsal exercise had concluded on the school grounds.

CCTV footage later reviewed by investigators shows a gang of unknown assailants forcing their way into the compound under the cover of darkness. The attackers first ambushed the two guards on duty, then broke into several offices, including the computer laboratory, leaving destruction in their wake.

“I received a call at around 1 a.m., and upon arriving at the school, one guard had already succumbed to his injuries while the other died on the way to hospital,” said Evans Owala, the school’s principal.

According to Mr. Owala, the gang sabotaged all CCTV cameras before escaping with about ten laptops, several keyboards, and Safaricom routers. Some of the gadgets were later found dumped along the suspected escape path.

Detectives are now analyzing the recovered CCTV clips and other forensic evidence as they follow leads that could reveal the identities of those behind the attack.

Early findings suggest the intruders might have been familiar with the school environment, raising suspicions of an inside job.

School administrators believe that a suspended Form Four student, who allegedly caused commotion during Friday’s rehearsal, may have orchestrated the assault in collaboration with other former students.

“They took ten laptops and some keyboards, but dropped a few as they fled. They also vandalized all CCTV cameras along the corridors,” Mr. Owala added.

Relatives of the deceased guards have called for swift justice.

“I was shocked when I received the news. We just want justice for those who were killed,” said Dickson Omollo, brother to one of the victims, Kenneth Wanjala.

The bodies of the two guards are being preserved at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) mortuary awaiting autopsies. Meanwhile, investigators continue to reconstruct the sequence of events, with sources confirming that the CCTV footage will be central in tracking down the suspects.
