“Twasema Asante”: Nancy Macharia officially hands over TSC leadership in moving farewell

Outgoing TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia and Commission Chairperson Dr. Jamleck Muturi after the official handover ceremony at TSC headquarters today.

Teachers Service Commission (TSC) CEO  Dr Nancy Macharia officially handed over office today, June 30, 2025, marking the end of a 10-year tenure at the helm of Kenya’s teacher management agency.

In a heartfelt farewell moment captured on video and seen by Education News, Dr Macharia was escorted out of TSC headquarters by senior staff led by TSC Chairperson Dr Jamleck Muturi.

The group sang the worship song “Tunasema Asante, Twasema Asante, Twasema Asante, Ewe Mungu Wetu”, which translates to “We say thank you, we say thank you, we say thank you, oh our God.”

Her exit marks the close of a decade-long leadership that saw major policy shifts in teacher promotion, digital operations, and recruitment.

Dr Macharia became the first female CEO of the TSC in July 2015, succeeding Gabriel Lengoiboni. Her appointment coincided with a period of rising tensions between the government and teachers’ unions, and she was immediately tasked with navigating industrial disputes while implementing government reforms in the education sector.

During her tenure, Macharia spearheaded the digitisation of TSC services, including the online teacher recruitment and promotion systems.

She was instrumental in rolling out the biometric registration of teachers, enforcing Teacher Professional Development (TPD) frameworks, and launching the delocalisation policy—one of the most debated initiatives of her time in office.

Under her leadership, TSC transitioned from manual processes to data-driven decision-making tools and introduced a robust teacher performance appraisal system (TPAD).

Despite criticism from teacher unions on some policy directions, Macharia remained a key figure in shaping the teaching profession in Kenya. Her departure comes at a time when the education sector is preparing for the complete transition into senior school under CBE, and stakeholders will be watching closely to see who steps into the role next.
