Learning institutions offering technical and vocational education curriculums have been called upon to form linkages with industry players in order to make their granduands who marketable.
Speaking at the Ramogi Institute of Advanced Technology (RIAT) in Kisumu during a Dual TVET consortium, Western region director of TVET, Audrey Odhiambo said such linkages will go a long way in offering hands on exposure for the students.
Odhiambo said skills which have been acquired within the industry makes students more adaptive to industry needs and even changing trends.
“The model ensures that the private sector is actively involved in training so that learners graduate with the skills and experience that employers actually require.” She said.
She said the curriculum makes students acquire skills on the job while working elsewhere.
The gathering brought together industry players, heads of TVET institution together with partners.
Odhiambo said that 12,000 students have gone through the Dual TVET curriculum while some 3,500 institutions have so far offered the prestigious curriculum.

“The training is vital since it mates industry players train students according to their needs.” She said
Odhiambo added that the curriculum, which adopts a 75 per cent workplace and 25 per cent classroom training model, represents a significant shift in how young people are prepared for the labour market by integrating employers directly into the training process.
Shamberere National Polytechnic chief principal Dr Elsiha Nyamu welcomes the whole initiative, saying it is timely since it will produce industry players with the requisite skills and the desired workplace experience.
A TVET trainer Esther Ndichu also reiterated that the whole programme which she noted is noble should be supported by other industry players.
She said they are targeting upcoming students who would be interested in pursuing TVET courses.
RIAT chief principal Dr Gilbert Mwavali said the learning institution is now a Dual TVET centre, adding that the institution is fast growing with close to 10,000 students currently enrolled there.
He said they offer some of the best courses in the region.
