TVETs to get more state funding, Machogu says

The government will allocate more funds to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions in the country to enable them to operate more effectively and efficiently.

Principal Secretary for Basic Education Dr. Belio Kipsang was speaking during the Kenya Association of Technical Training Institutions (KATTI) annual conference held at Flamingo Beach Resort in Mombasa on behalf of the Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Dr. Eziekel Machogu.

He emphasized the importance of technical education in the country and disclosed that the government will continue to prepare and support Kenyans to acquire basic skills for future self-reliance.

This comes after KATTI National Chairperson Glory Mutungi lamented that many TVET institutions in the country lacked the necessary learning facilities and equipment thus she asked the government to direct more funds towards them to enhance technical education in the country.

Mutungi said that the situation has frustrated efforts towards delivering quality technical education in addition to the institutions lacking tutors.

Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Technical Education Director, Mr. Tom Mulati had earlier said that the government was aware of the challenges and that it will sort them in phases.

While asking the institutions to initiate income generating activities to generate revenue to cater for their daily use, he said that the government will recruit 3,000 tutors in January 2023.
