The managements of Technical Vocational Training Institutes (TVETs) have been advised to ensure their levels of training and management are tailored to the rising popularity of courses among school leavers.
Kipkurui Lang’at, Director General of TVETA, said the growing interest in technical courses should never be taken for granted.
In a statement, the director said that the high number of colleges seeking registration and accreditation by the authority is an indication that skills attained in technical institutions are hugely popular.
The authority, Lang’at clarified, will continue to register institutions based on the facilities available and qualifications of instructors to ensure that standards are not compromised in the existing and newly created ones.
Lang’at assured that the authority continues to be guided by professionalism to provide a workforce digitally and technical skilled to serve the needs of the labour market.
He said organizations such as the Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE) offer frequent benchmarking data to the authority especially through reports such as the Skills Needs Survey Report.
Latest data from the FKE indicate that the building and construction sector suffers one of the largest deficits of workers, particularly because it is viewed as dirty and a preserve of older people.
Most TVETs have been in the forefront of creating training packages to cover provision of skills in the emerging trades such as building and construction.
