The Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA), in partnership with the Commonwealth of Learning (COL), has launched a virtual capacity-building programme to strengthen Open, Distance and e-Learning (ODeL) in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.

The programme which targets TVET trainers from National Polytechnics (NPs) and Special Needs TVET Institutions (SNTVETs,  focuses on the ODeL Standard and the ODeL Standard Implementation Tool, which guide institutions seeking accreditation as ODeL Centres and support effective delivery of TVET programmes through online and blended learning.

More than 600 TVET trainers and ODeL practitioners from 30 National Polytechnics and four SNTVETs are taking part in the training. Institutions are expected to establish functional and well-coordinated ODeL Centres to improve access to training.

The initiative aims to enhance the quality of skills development within the TVET sector. Strengthened online learning systems are expected to support flexible training pathways for trainees across the country.

The current programme supports institutions to adopt the standard and prepare for quality audit and accreditation. Participants are being taken through the ODeL Standard during the first phase of training.

Sensitization on the ODeL Standard Implementation Tool will take place next week. The sessions will guide institutions on practical application of the standard.

According to the stakeholders, the project will support the development and application of Learning Management Systems (LMS). It will also support the creation and implementation of digital training content.

Quality audits and accreditation of institutions, programmes, trainers and ODeL Centres will be carried out under the ODeL Standard. The process will be led by TVETA in collaboration with COL.

The programme will support the co-creation of knowledge products such as micro-courses. A practice paper on ODeL implementation in Kenya will also be developed.

Implementation is being carried out in collaboration with the National ODeL Centre at the Kenya School of TVET (KSTVET). Regional partners include Nigeria’s National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and Zambia’s Technical Education, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training Authority (TEVETA).

The training reflects TVETA’s commitment to promoting innovative, inclusive and quality-assured TVET delivery in line with national priorities and global best practices.
