TVET students urged to join Huawei ICT competition

Principal Secretary for TVET, Dr. Esther Muoria.

The Ministry of Education has called on principals of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions across Kenya to encourage students to register for the Huawei ICT Global Competition. Principal Secretary for TVET, Dr. Esther Muoria, said the event is a vital platform for identifying and showcasing top ICT talent from universities and TVET institutions.

Muoria described the competition as a prime example of public–private partnerships positively impacting education and youth empowerment. Earlier this year, Huawei and the State Department for TVET signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in South Africa to strengthen talent development. The MoU will expand training to 150 TVET institutions and build ICT skills capacity for trainers and learners annually. It also aims to foster innovation and enhance the industry readiness of graduates.

“ICT is no longer just a support function; it is central to manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, logistics, and financial sectors,” Muoria said.

She added, “This global challenge offers our TVET trainees a platform to apply their skills internationally, benchmark against global industry standards and showcase Kenya’s talent to the world. Such initiatives strengthen Kenya’s position in the global digital economy, open pathways for youth employment and entrepreneurship, and ensure our workforce is ready for the fast-evolving technology landscape.”

Muoria further encouraged, “I urge all TVET trainees to take part even as we train with, in, and for industry, to ensure that every skill learned has a clear path to opportunity and impact.”

In attendance at the launch on August 14, 2025, were Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs Dr. Korir Sing‘oei, Ministry of Education representatives and Huawei officials.

Kenya has a strong record in the Huawei ICT Competition, which now takes place in over 85 countries worldwide. At the 2025 Global Finals in Shenzhen, China, a team from JKUAT and Machakos University won first prize in the Computing track. A combined team from Machakos University, JKUAT and the University of Nairobi earned second place in the Network track.

An all-female team from Moi University and JKUAT secured second prize in the Cloud track. Egerton University’s ‘Silicon Savannah’ team took third place in the Innovation track. The Women in Tech Award went to the Kenyan all-girls team, highlighting gender inclusion.

The 2025 competition attracted over 210,000 students from more than 2,000 universities, emphasizing the global scale and competitiveness of the event. These achievements reflect Kenya’s growing ICT capabilities and commitment to innovation.

Dr. Muoria urged students to seize the opportunity offered by the Huawei ICT Competition to enhance their skills and contribute to Kenya’s digital transformation. Registration details are available at TVET institutions and on the Huawei ICT Competition website.
