TVET Regional Director urges students to join TVETs

Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) Lower Eastern Regional Director John Wamae has called upon form four leavers and disengaged youth to take advantage of the subsidized trainings in national TVETs.

Speaking in his office in Wote, Wamae argued that the national government pays Ksh 30,000 to every student in TVET and that HELB loans and capitation make TVET education affordable.

“Needy students might only be required to pay statutory fees,” he said.

In Lower Region, there are 11 institutions with 5,000 students. Wote Technical Training Institute has the highest enrolment of 2,498 learners while Ikutha TTI has the lowest enrollment of 128 learners.

“The enrolment in the region is very low hence the need for more youth to join TVETs. Most students shun studying in rural areas yet the areas of study are the same,” he said.

He added that the country is moving towards provisional competency based training.

He urged students to be innovative in their areas of training and added that the learners have the advantage of having practical lessons through state of the art equipment.

“Through the skills acquired, the students have the advantage of creating employment.” He said.
