The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has called on institutions to ensure students choose right courses and use approved facilities during examinations.

KNEC TVET examination managers who attended a workshop in Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology were told to ensure facilities owned by the institutions are used by students as using cyber cafes for computer classes is discouraged.

The facilities must be inspected by the Council before approval to be used for examinations.

The Council does not also encourage registration of students in institutions where they were not enrolled.

The two-day workshop was organized by Kenya Association of Technical Training Institutions (KATTI) in collaboration with KNEC. It was opened by KNEC Chief Executive Officer David Njengere, who told the managers to maintain professionalism when doing their work.

The managers were told to ensure they only register students into courses that are accredited as some had been phased out. Some of the managers had requested the Council to review courses and ensure they are marketable.

Some students ignorantly want to apply for courses that have been phased out and the managers were requested to always be alert to know the courses on offer.

Industrial attachment is mandatory since it is part of course work. The examination body will develop a tool to manage the industrial attachments.

Ngong Technical and Vocational College Principal Teresia Mutuko said the workshop was essential since there are many new institutions that need such trainings to do their work professionally.

“We had challenges of students registering for wrong courses and others receiving incomplete results but we have been informed what to do when such errors occur and most of our challenges have been addressed,” she said.

The workshops were held across the country and attended by the KNEC TVET examination managers.
